This is a very nice machine. I have owned one for 10 years now and it is my primary hunting tool. I would echo what others have said. It is best to begin with the preset programs. I would suggest the "Coin" program, for starters, unless you are using it at the beach. That program will provide a good balance of discrimination (especially for iron/junk) and sensitivity. Take time to learn the machine. It is extremely accurate and I have never gotten a false positive from mine. There have been many times the detector will tell me something is in my dirt pile and I can't see it with my eyes for a while...but something is always there in the end.
I will also encourage you to do a web search for White's XLT programs. There are lots of sites where guys have built their own programs, many for more specific hunting conditions. Its fun to build & save your own programs and really helps you understand what all the different settings are and how changing them can affect your machine. You can't hurt anything by making up your own programs, as you can simply delete them as necessary. As for me, I use a custom program which is basically the "Coin" program with VDI tones turned on and a little tweaking to the AC & DC settings.
While the XLT is no longer cutting-edge technology, it is a very capable machine which, once learned, will provide many years of accurate & reliable digging fun! Just last week I went to my wife's grandmother's farm and found a near mint 1945 Mercury dime in the middle of a patch of old aluminum foil, old cans, and rusted mason jar lids. Not a spectacular find by any means, but it should speak to the capability of the detector to pick this out of a bunch of trash metal. Hope this helps!
