From what I'm seeing it isn't look real. I'm thinking a cast fake. There is too much wrong with the dollar. Dentile (SP? teeth looking things around the edge. ) are not consistent. Even something worn or exposed to damage would not look like that. Letters and numbers look wrong. If someone is trying to sell that to you I would back off the deal.

I think someone planted them for him to find.

Here is a close up of a morgan dollar. Notice the teeth on the edge. They should be consistent all the way around the coin front and back. One easy thing to look for is what seems like casting bubbles between the teeth.

Some of the newer and better fakes are harder to tell if a fake. The cast ones are pretty easy to tell. But either way you really need to be careful. Morgan dollars are one of the most common faked coins out there.

I'm 99.9 % sure it is a counterfeit.
They started really flooding the market several years back. One other word of warning. If he ever travels to the U.S., it would be best not to bring it along. Unless it has been stamped either replica or copy some place on it. There is a possibility he could get in trouble with the law here. Morgan dollars are still considered legal tender here. So a counterfeit could be bad news.

BTW normally the cast ones were not even .900 fine silver.

jvealaw if fake its not a 100 year plus old coin. (Still saying it is.) More then likely it was made in the last few years.  BTW Just so you understand where I'm coming from saying its fake. I have been collecting U.S. coins for close to 40 years. I have studied morgan dollars in depth. The 1890 p morgan dollar had about 30 dies used in the minting of the coin. None of those had teeth on the edges like that. And really none of the other years had teeth like that. Minted and cast coins have a totally different look.
