The oldest US coin is a 1796 half dime, silver, only minted 10,000...found in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania
The oldest coin for me ever is this Roman coin, Diva Faustina, 141AD....found in England
Both coins, upon seeing them, stopped the old ticker for a few minutes....got to love this hobby....thanks Jim

I can see why they'd stop your ticker.

Thanks for sharing them with us.

Gorgeous half-dime.  I have an 1829 in great shape, but anytime you break the 1800's, here in the states is always a great thrill!!

The Roman is a beaut too - where and withwhom did you do the England trip?
I'm heading over March 12th for a week.
Barry

Hi Barry...I go on Roy Davis's trips at metaldetectingtours.com...Roy is a class act and I've been with a few others but I find him to be the best of the bunch.
I'm going over this year in the fall for 10 days.  We travel northeast to Hunstanton, a quaint resort town on the North Sea....
Hope you enjoy your trip to England.
Regards, Jim

Duncan,
you missed a star on Jim's half dime.  There are actually 15.  One is partially obscured by the glare in the lower center.   At the time this coin was minted, the number of star to be included was not yet fixed at 13 for the original states.   The 16th state was admitted in June 1796, so this coin correctly carries 15 stars, one for each state in the union at the time of minting.    The change to 13 was made in 1797, so you have 1797 half-dimes with 13, 15, or 16 stars.
