Quote:Posted by ClickTheYellowChick
Back in the early 90s, I was teaching one of my "Senior Citizen" 6 week seminars on above ground THing, I called GoTrUnking at the time.  We gathered on Tuesday afternoons for 90 minutes.  Divided into Senior Show & Tell, Evaluation, and New Techniques/Weekly Assignment, the three 30 minute segments always passed quickly with the "students" always begging for more.

During one series of introductions, Bettye Anonymous shared that she was a retired career military man's wife.  No biggie, right?

Week 2 found me bringing a sampling of various print resources from my own reference collection to show what was available for SCs to use in their personal research of the various items they had collected over the years.  Bettye glommed onto the Parker's color illustrated Hot Wheels reference I brought to class.  She basically was engrossed for the rest of the class period and didn't interact with the rest of the group.

At the end of class, Bettye asked if she could borrow the book, and promised she'd return it in good shape in "a couple of weeks."  Reluctantly granting her wish as I rarely let my references out of sight, let alone for a "home visit elsewhere," I watched her tuck it carefully into her things and head out the door.

She continued to attend classes for the next 3 weeks and on week 5, when there was only one week left in our seminar, she bounced into class, returned the none the worse for wear Parker reference, and shared the following story.

Not only was Bettye a career military wife, she and now retired-hubby had a son while they were stationed in England.  The whole time they were stationed there, she began buying MIB Lesney Hot Wheels.  And she bought them in multiples, hoping, of course, for multiple sons before her child bearing years passed.

Since Jeremy was too young to play with them at that time, she packed them away.  When shipped out to their next assignment, the packed away Hot Wheels boxes and contents' box went with them, and remained untouched, as the contents were basically forgotten.

Here it was 25 years later, and Jeremy and his new bride were scraping and skimping, trying to put together a downpayment on their first home.  The same 25 years later, here was Bettye in GoTrUnking class.

She joyfully went first in Show 'n Tell that 5th Tuesday.  Turns out, Bettye used the reference book -- yes, with accompanying Price Guide in back-- to catalog Jeremy's Hot Wheels collection.  She happily chirped that Jeremy was going to be able to double the amount he and new bride would be able to put down on their new home from $3,000 to $7,500, and that she and her husband had just informed the kids the night before at dinner of their good fortune.

Turns out, Bettye had purchased several of the wierd colors issued those two years in England, such as the chartreuse colored ones, etc., that were valued at over $500 apiece, let alone still with their boxes.

Everytime I hear of die-cast collectors, I remember Bettye and Jeremy and just silently smile...
