Hi, does anyone have some good advice on how to recover a target when the sea is about the colour of oxtail soup and you can't see the coil or the bottom at all? I'm thinking about hunting in water depths up to the waist or thereabouts.

This is the usual state of the sea on our part of the coast.

Hi! optymyst, "The colour of oxtail soup" Mmmmmm...... now there is one I can't help you with or maybe if you get a bigger scoop?  Anyway don't loose your optimism.

I'd suggest a plastic scoop so you wouldn't have to move your coil away until the last second. Visibility is zero for most of us anyway since the item is under sand or pebbles making it impossible to see. The only disadvantage you have is not being able to make a mental mark of where to scoop. Use plastic and scoop from the heel of the coil to the toe. Repeat for deeper targets.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thank you, GoldDigger, that makes sense. Have to find a way to do it. I guess it's really a case of getting in there and trying and then seeing what techniques I can develop. The plastic scoop sounds like a good starting point.

My method of recovering underwater targets while wading are very simple and not hard to learn with a little practice. Once you locate an object and have pinpointed the same move your left foot "toe" to the back edge of the coil. Move the coil out of the way to the right and place the front edge of your digger "I use a stainless steel type" at the tip of your toe, angle to scoop to pentrate, shove it in the dirt with your foot and scoop out. Repeat the process until you recover your target. Most of the time I am able to get the item on the first or second try. I've done this in water up to my chest. You can practice this on dry land to see what you are doing. GD's comment is similiar............

That's great, thanks very much, John. Your answer to the problem, along with GoldDigger's method, gives me confidence I shan't be wasting time, money and effort having a go. Once the water temp is up a bit (still got some snow around) I shall get in there and hope to have some interesting finds to post.

If you are in rocks,  get yourself a vibraprobe pinpointer.  They are waterproof to 30 feet.

Thanks, Jim, hadn't heard of a vibraprobe - I'll check that out. Could be as useful at two feet as thirty.

Golddigger, I've been looking for a plastic SIEVE type scoop that won't interfer with the probe. Have you seen one?

I have an excalibur, and use the toe method, 90% of the time I recover the target, the other 10% I burry it deeper!
Cheers
