I looked at the specs for the detector and it doesn't seem to have a ground balance. That's a sad state of affairs for a VLF machine.

I agree completely. Ground balance was one of the biggest breaks in detecting machines. In most cases it really cuts down the amount of false beeps.  Wink

Sounds like I need to adjust my controls and scan that area separately, because I'll go nuts trying to go in and out of the black sand zone.   [idea]Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!  I'm ready to give it another shot! Great

Ok, I went out this weekend.  Turned my sensitivity way down, and focused on the black sand section.  Made some nice additions to my rusty nail & cruddy old bottle cap collection.  (ha ha)  After a short while, I moved on to other areas.  I haven't given up yet, but I'll say it once again:  Darn that black sand! Bang Head

Adding to the bottle cap collection wouldn't be so bad if the bottle caps we were finding were a) in better shape and b) rare....unfortunately the ones I found are even less valuable than the rusty nails.    Detecting

I actually get a kick out of some of the really old ones that are still recognizable.
