Going tomorrow, first time with p.i. I know its the cheaper end of the market but as you say maybe a good starter and only two knobs to fiddle with.I was wondering about pinpointing, is it possible with this machine or is it guesswork?. Good luck in the gully.

Pinpointing should be good, so no worries there.  Great

Probably Looe beach, but we may try Millendreath which is pretty close to Looe, do you know it?
Thanks Ray. Just out of curiosity , im looking at your list of detectors and i was wondering if you had a favourite, maybe one that does everything well , beach and dry land, . Im already thinking about my next one you see.

The only thing that would come near to being an all round detector would be one of the MineLab models, but they tend to be heavy, and the recovery is slow. A resonable model of "ALL ROUND" detector however could be the Fisher CZ20/21. I prefer to use detectors that are specialised for individual areas, as "all round" models tend to me a jack of all trades and master of none, and will get some goodies but lose out on things like thin gold rings, or chains etc. I have two XP?s at the moment, but might just trade them in for the new DEUS model as it does the job of both and then some, but is VERY EXPENSIVE at ? 1400.00
The PI is my tool for the salt water, the Fisher 1280X is my tool for fresh water (Theoretically it will work in salt water, but it would be hard work).
It?s like trying to get a pick up to be a luxury car, a builders truck, a camper, a HGV, and a PSV, plus expect good mpg, and low road tax. It just doesn?t add up if you try to fit it all in one.

What you can do, is get a unit for salt water and black sand (PI or multi freq.), and a unit for land and dry sand (Thats what my Fisher 1265X and Minelab Advantage are for, the dry sand and wet sand down to the shore line, although they do false if I go into the water and require the sens reducing).
My other units I keep purely for inland, and like I said, the Fisher 1280X for inland lakes and rivers (Freshwater)  Cool

I?ve only ever bought ONE new detector since I started detecting, and I still have that.  Cool
Most detectors I by used, and nearly always from a dealer with three months warranty (You never know), as if it?s going to go wrong, they usually go wrong in the first few weeks of use. However they have then been serviced and are back up to factory specifications, so no worries.
saves you about 25% to 33%  compared to new, and you have warranty too.
That way you can afford TWO detectors.
Also, don?t go for the NEWEST MODEL, I almost always take a model that is 3 to five maybe even more years old, that doesn?t say it?s bad, they are quite often still in production, the newer models just have more gadjets and adjustments, and are maybe a bit lighter, but for a further saving of maybe 33%; I CAN LIVE WITH IT !!
The Fisher 1280X and the Whites SurfMaster PI Deep Diver are prime examples, as is the Fisher 1265X. All three have been superceeded, but do the job they were designed for just fine !!  Great
