Very nice, *cough*, scoop.
I have a question. I heard a long time ago, it was illegal to metal detect any National Seashore. Is that not correct? Did the law change or am I just mistaken?

When it comes to National Seashores, you are correct.  It is illegal to metal detect in them.  They fall under the National Park Service and are subject to the same laws and regulations as National Parks...Outside their borders is another story though.   Reference

Thanks Bit. You have obviously done your homework. I knew I had heard something to that effect. You wouldn't happen to know where to get 1900-1950 maps of cities, would you? I have been searching all day and just getting the run around on the internet while searching for old maps of Garland, Tx to find old swimming holes and parks. Everything just leads to modern maps or artists renderings of the entire city.

Here are a couple of possibilities.

1)  (This one hurts since it's twice this week that I've referred people to this University of Texas resources....I really wish it was at A&M or even as SMU or Baylor) the Perry-Casta?eda Library Map Collection  (

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/
) is one of the best online sources of historical maps in the United States.   I've checked and they have the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for Garland for 1901, 1906, and 1919 online.   (they may have other maps that will help you in other sections, so look around a bit while you are online).   As far as I'm concerned, Sanborn maps are the maps of choice and worth their weight in silver if not in gold.

2)  If the Perry-Castaneda collection did not have the Sanborn maps, I was going to suggest you check your local library home page.   Many libraries have links to special collections that would cost the average user an arm and a leg to subscribe to.   Usually all you need to access them throught the library is an internet connection to the library home page and a valid library card.

3)  I'm ALWAYS checking e-bay for old road maps and topographic maps.....yeah, I have to pay for them and wait for them to show up, but once they do, I can do anything I want with.   (you can check garage sales and estate sales for old maps as well as used bookstores....you'd be surprised what you'll find in some yardsales and bookstores and how far back the maps go--never leave a used bookstore or a yard sale without checking to see if they have any maps you could use).

BA

I did a little more checking at the UT website, and they also have two different scale Garland topographical maps online date 1959

I  like to hunt the beach in the morning. The best is just on daylight and about 1 or 2 hours before low tide.
you can work the edges with the falling tide .If you go in the evening there is always a lot more people about

In the summer I prefer to hunt at night less/no people. In the winter I go for low tide to water hunt day or night.

At the beach, hunt anytime. Go where the people are. In and out among them. If the tide is low, go into the wet sand and even into the shallow water (you know, where people go and splash water on themselves and say "brrr". Thats where their rings slide off. Just protect your detector if it's not waterproff. You definitely need a scoop. Nothing else can come close. I use one with a 24" handle. Others use ones that they can stand on. But any will do.
