How long will you be at the beach?   If you'll be there for more than a day or two, you might find it beneficial to spend the first day scoping it out.....check to see where people sun themselves (shaken towels and blankets often mean lost coins and jewelry); what routes people take to the concession stands and showers, if any; where the volleyball and frisbee cames are; which sections of the beach attract the folks with the "bling".  Then go back either before the crowds show up or after they have left to do your actual hunting.

You'll find tons of practical tips just by reading the posts in this section.

Also, it would be beneficial for you to check the tides before your trip. You will be able to hunt more area at low tide, especially the areas that are normally underwater.

In my area, the tides have been lowest at night. You will not see low tides in the day really until winter on the Gulf Coast where I am. For your first hunt I would go in the daytime.

Very nice, *cough*, scoop.
I have a question. I heard a long time ago, it was illegal to metal detect any National Seashore. Is that not correct? Did the law change or am I just mistaken?
