I have the same problem.  I watched a small gold?? earring slip thru a Nuttal scoop twice and was unable to find it the third time.  I bought some 1/4" hardware cloth and am going to try and maske an insert, I'll let you know how it works out.   Wise

Living in the desert, I have practically no beach hunting experience, so these are tips I've read about or heard of from MD'ers with experience but have not tried myself:

1)  affix a magnet to the scoop to handle any small magnetic pieces

2)  fasten a small women's hair brush or something similar inside to snag the links of fine chains.

Both make sense to me.
