Hello everyone,  pretty new to this forum and to water detecting.  Briefly, I have a new CZ-21, and live pretty much inland. I have land metal detected for some time, and had a CZ-5 for a couple of years.  This detector seems similar without the meter.  I will be mainly hunting fresh water beaches at lakes, rivers, swimming holes. etc.  Can anyone give me some hints as to how the best way to approach a beach of this type?  I am retired so I will mainly be hunting during the weekdays when hopefully there will not be as many people at these locations, so it may be hard to discern where the people have hung out. I can visit them during the weekends to scope them out if that is what I should do.  I am in central CA.  Any good books on this topic that one can recommend?  Any good tutorial type videos out there for hunting in fresh/shallow water?  I have a decent water scoop, but not yet one for dry sand. Suggestions welcome for this too. I am on a fixed income but can spend some money for a decent sand scoop.  I plan to hunt both the dry beaches and in the shallow water - perhaps waist deep at most.  I have wading boots (basically waterproof hiking boots) that I use for fishing that I am thinking of wearing (good idea or no?)  I have a wet suit I use for dredging, but may have to get a lighter weight one for summer.  Anybody use neoprene fishing waders? Are they a better choice? Anyway, I am going to try and get out as soon as the weather is good here during the week, and any advice would be appreciated.

Where in central California are you located? I'm from Fresno, Calif are you close by?

I work part time, semi retired and have days off during the week. Watch out for the Waders, not a good idea if they fill with water. I hunt different parks and river spots and go to the coast each month and hunt the beaches both dry sand and in the water, own a fisher x65, a Garrett Sea Hunter and a Garrett Ace 250.

I have been looking at ways to build a good sand scoop out of metal that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, will be working to fab one to see if i can beat the cost, will inform when ready.

As usual, there's a lot of information that can be found just by using the Advanced Search function of this forum.   For instance, here are two threads discussing waders vs wetsuits vs drysuits:
