Go Up Go Down

I am new to water hunting, and I want to pick out my first water scoop - I have a dry sand scoop.  I will be shallow water hunting in California and Arizona fresh water lakes and and rivers.  I have looked at the Diamond Head, the RGT scoops, etc.  I am uncertain as to the size I should get (I have post carpal tunnel hands that are not the strongest in terms of grip strength and endurance).  I do not know if I need a pointed scoop, a shovel nose scoop, or one that is stainless or aluminum - or aluminum with stainless tip. A metal handle or a wood one, one mounted at 70 degrees or 90?  The sand is mostly course (not like ocean beaches in Florida) And if I do hunt some CA salt beaches (which will be rare -  at least for now), the sand is not very fine.  Some of the rivers I will hunt will have course sand and some small sized gravels as well.  Can anyone that has hunted in these kind of situations give me a suggestion? Every time I think I am close, I read more posts that make me question my decision.  I realize there is no perfect scoop, but on a fixed budget I would like to at least make the best first decision I can.  I want one that is sturdy, but that does not weigh 6 lbs plus.?

I have a diamond head and two RGT scoops all are stainless. The diamond is more heavy. All work well in the water.

Thanks, one of the scoops I seriously considered was the Diamond Head.  I finally ended purchasing the 5Granik-2 scoop which is virtually the same scoop but with more holes and less weight and also made out of stainless steel.

I have several of these scoops and love them:

I would rate them a good A++. They use stainless wire and sift sand very well. I have some other brands of scoops that only have the holes punched in the stainless sheet and they don't clear wet sand very well.

All scoops that are on the international market made from metal. It does not comfort. Russian way is next. The main condition was the transparency for a metal detector, so
scooping up the sand could be held over the coil and immediately understand
that there is or not. If not, immediately shakes out and we will continue.
All materials are very available. As a result following decision: sparing of PVC pipes.
Take a piece of PVC pipe for sanitation (picture 1) and cut at an angle  (picture 1) and drilled (pictures 1 & 2), then cut out handles. Plastics bend inwards - so it will be convenient hands.

Am really liking these scoops I purchased locally at Treasuresdownunder.com   They pass sand in a blink of the eye, work great in grave/muck/marle/peat/clay bottoms and see bulletproof tough.  The large one weights like 2.5 pounds and the smaller is a half pound less. The floating wood handle is very handy!

Here is a full small scoop's volume dumped into the larger for comparison:

Thanks for all the help guys, now I just have to pick one and get in the water and giver it a go. Have done a little bit of hunting about ankle deep at a local river spot, and my RTG sand scoop worked well, but I can see the need for a bigger heavier duty scoop. Thanks again.

The Nuttall Diamondhead and the Reilys Herculese 7" or 8" are excellent scoops . The Diamondhead will really cut through a hard bottom as well as shells.
The Reillys Hercules scoops are great if you run a PI. The 8" really gets the coverage as my DF has a 12" coil .

well I hunt the beaches of SoCalif so I know the sand.  I have used aluminum scoops and they don't last very long in the wet sand as there are lots of cobblestones and shell layers on some beaches. The way to go is Stainless Steel. I have a diamond scoop and I like it alot, its not too heavy and it cuts well. It would be a good lake or River scoop, in fact I own two of them
right now, one has a 40" fiberglass handle, the other is shorter and it is SS.
