How big a magnet, and how/where do you attach them.  If they are epoxyed in, how do you clean the tiny stuff off.

Thanks   Wise

I've heard of people using the rare earth magnets, small but very strong, have seen a few on eBay that are round with a hole in the center that you could tie into the back of the bucket. Just an idea, HTH.

We use two of those plastic tie-wraps to secure a small-diameter round speaker magnet(about 2" or 3" diameter) to the bottom of the stainless steel duck-bill scoop. It sure saves us trouble by alowing us to not have to dig and re-dig those pesky small nails and pieces of wire, etc.

Don't know about the rest of you, but we use magnets attached to our diggers on dry land, too---especially when we're hunting in high junk areas.

Put a very strong, rare earth magnet inside of a watertight plastic bottle and tie it with a nylon cord to your scoop. That keeps it near to hand, clean and dry while you use it to fish out hairpins, fishhooks, nails, paper clips and other steel and iron junk.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Another good source of dirt cheap incredibly strong neodymium magnets are old computer hard drives.

Idaho Jones, I'll second this. The older drives have large magnets that have a steel backing that you can drill holes in for attachment. They are light weight and incregiblly strong. Only problem is they stick to everything. I kept haveing to peel it off of my digging tools.  Cool

yep watch your fingers cause they will pinch. So strong you have to slide them apart if two stick together. I use them to clear out the black sand from my gold pans but only the plastic ones  Grin
