I'm new here.  It sounds like everyone just jumps in with what they've got.  Any pointers for how to get started with no knowledge of the trade and a borrowed metal detector (cheap)?  I like the friendliness of the community.  All the very best to everyone!  ImNit4gold

Hello, Sharky!  Thanks for the good advice!  Seems that learning anything new is about the same.  If you want the goods, you pay the dues!  I'm using the detector in my yard first - then on to the park.  Much success to you!   Debra

Read the previous topics in the Beginners board.  You'll pick up a wealth of information VERY quickly that way (and try applying the tips you read).   Then pick another area that interest you and read the topics.   If there is a board of your specific brand of detector (and there probably is, read all the posts related to your model).

And practice, practice, practice.....pay attention to how your detector is responding in different situations.   Like most other skills, most of this is actually mental.

Thanks for the info.  I will do that.  With so much information flying around here, I haven't been sure where to look first.  Even choosing a detector isn't simple.  Right now I'm using a borrowed one and looking for my own.  Minelab's X-Terra 505 looks good so far.  Is that a good machine?  Do you use one of those stick-looking ones to help pinpoint finds (like the Automax)?  The soil around here is clay with lots of iron.  Thanks for the pointers.  I really appreciate it.  You have lots of good advice.  I've read your posts all over the place!  Thanks again,   Debra

If your budget can handle a minelab, I don't know many people who are going to say bad things about them (other than they can be pretty heavy compared to a lot of other detectors).    And while I think everyone should learn how to use their detector to pinpoint targets, using an auxillary pinpointer like the Automax speeds things up (took me a while to come around on that one  Wink )

"Pretty heavy compared to other detectors" doesn't sound so good.  Any suggestions?  I'm open for them.  Debra   (Please and Thank you!)
