It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

There is no best, only the best for what you are doing. I am fairly new myself, but if you want to start simple and work your way up then go with something like a Tesoro Compadre ($150 new $75 used) or a Fisher 1212x (same price range). Nothing spectacular, but supposed to be good for play grounds and the sort. One knob controls and easy to use. I would suggest craiglook.com (searches all craigslist postings) and do your homework. Another unit you can pick up that is supposed to be really nice, old, but nice is the Fisher 1265x you can find those in the $100 to $150 range, but they are long out of production. I just got two great deals one on craiglook and the other at a pawn shop that I had to fix, but I shopped and did my homework.

Good Luck

Sean
BTW: Use the search function at the top of the page and search "best detector", I have a feeling this has been asked more than once.

Oh, yeah.......that question has been asked a whole lot.   And if you follow Sean's advice and use the search function (make sure you search the entire forum), you'll not only be able to read what members have written on the subject before, but you will find links to a copy of websites that have a lot of user reviews and ratings.   You'll also find tips on places you can look for good used detectors.

I own and use on regular basis some high-end Minelabs, had two XLTs, etc.

Bt I like humble, modest, but efficeint detectors.

That's why you will find me most of the time swinging a Tesoro Compadre with a 8" (20 cm) brown doughnut coil.

Found 3500 + coins in ten months of (partial) use.

Once you get to know it, you beat the bigger boys with ease in the first 8".

Looking to purchase 1, thats why I am here

I am also looking for a detector.......and I have a significcant number of questions......is it not a good idea to purchase a used one; do these detectors all come with LIFETIME warranties or is that a brand specific thing? If so, can they be transferred if sold to someone else? Im planning on using one at the beach AND parks, or any other places I can think of, so a "multi-use" detector.....does that exist? Since  I dont like doing things half assed, I'd really like to start in mid grade.....essentially, I just want a really decent one.

What about this "Bounty Hunter Lone Star" (or vice versa on the name there)? This is a beginners, though isnt it?

And, would it be of any benefit to purchase a water proof detector? Are you able to tell that I'm clueless?

Also, any advice other than the metal detector itself is appreciated, also!

Crazy in Florida

There is an old saying crawl be fore you walk! Buy an inexpensive detector and work your way up to a better one! Since you live in florida either go to kellyco in winter park Fla. or contact them they will help you out on your detector. I started out with a Bounty Sharp shooter and saved enough money to buy a Garrett GTP 1350 in less then a year ! So keep that in mind also most units are waterproof up to the bottom of the control housing. I think kellyco is about the most inexpensive and they give you free bonus's with your detector!
