My GUESS is that they would work as good that way as any other way.

I have no experience with them.

thanks for the reply. I have watched the sales spiel videos that are on the website for one of the sellers of these, and they purport to show quite fine gold being found. I wonder if this might have been something I might have trouble achieving in the real world?

Gold is often found together with other minerals which can be detected. For example, when gold is ground up by nature into fine powder, it is often found with something called Black Sand, which can be detected as a mass when it gathers in cracks and crevices in old riverbeds. Most people believe it is some sort of malfunction in their detector and try to tune it out. Seriously. What it sounds like is a wavering, dull signal which masks the sound of larger targets much like white noise masks unpleasant sounds.
