Go Up Go Down

HI folks, first post here so please excuse how basic the layout is! I live in Australia and I'm looking to purchase a Minelab X-Terra 705, (Gold Pack). The problem is, have you seen the price over here compared to the USA? I've emailed several companies in the States but they appear to have some sort of manufacturers trade agreement so they won't post out to Australia. I emailed Minelab in Australia and all I got was a politicians answer that didn't really explain anything to me. (By the way, nearly all the Australian distributors seem to be advertising their "web specials" price at $100 more than Minelab Australia's recommended retail price). So what I wnat to know is, has anyone had any luck at getting a Minelab detector posted out from the States to Australia?

Thanks for your time, (incidentally, if I can't get one at a reasonable price, I'll probably go for the Fisher F70, what do you think of this machine in comparison to the Minelab?).

Guy

Minelab was successful in getting an import tariff on all NEW metal detectors to Australia. To avoid this, order one from KellyCo and have it sent to a friend in he USA where he or she should use it for a month or two, then send it as a second hand machine to you.

The Fisher F70 will attract the same tariff as the Minelab when it goes through customs. Not so if it is marked as used or second hand.

I recommend you get to know a few folks here and decide who you can trust for this sort of project of "using" your detector for a month.

Thanks Goldigger. Apparently I can buy the Fisher direct from Kellyco as a new machine and they will post it out to me, they will not post a new Minelab but will post a secondhand machine. Their postage rates to Australia are exceptional. I've looked at trying to price up the postage independantly, (something I would have to do if I bought a machine "privately"), but the shipping costs I have been quoted then outway the original savings I would have made from the initial purchase! There is no import tax on either machine as their purchase price is under $1000 AUD.

I have only read good reports regarding the Minelab, (which is why I'm tending to lean that way), whereas I've read a few conflicting articles about the Fisher ranging from "the best machine I've ever owned", to "a total disaster, never again!"

I used to detect a few years back in the UK with a Whites Eagle Spectrum so I'm not a complete novice to the hobby, but over here I'll only be using a machine for mainly beach work, (something I never did in England).

Thanks again for your comment

Then you should be happy that you can buy one here in Oz and not have to order it from overseas. I, too, like Minelab machines. But oddly enough, not the high end ones. The Musketeer Advantage is being phased out. If you can get one, do it now.
