what's the general feeling about campsites? i visited some my first time out and found a whole bunch of jtrash and nothing else. are they just simply a waste of time?

Dig the trash, go back and detect again. Repeat as necessary. Your finds will increase in number and improve in quality as you progress.

Always remember that where there is trash, there has been significant human activity and that means dropped coins and jewelry.

In the US your not allowed to dig in the Forest service camp sites but there are goodies to be had.

There are Boy Scout Camps, Girl Scout Camps, church camps, YMCA Camps and private campgrounds all over the world, mate. All require varying degrees of permission to hunt.

If you offer to clear out trash while you are there and leave no damage, they usually agree with vigor.

I know of one camp that is several pounds of nails and bottle caps lighter today than it was on December 31st.   It's also several pre-1950 coins lighter, too (not that I managed to find any of those, but several people in my group did).
