Are meteorites found in the southern parts of Alabama and Mississippi? Or anywhere in those states?

The short answer is yes.

My uncle found a strange black rock in his yard that matches a lot of the meterorite pictures you'll find online. I live next door and have found a few black sparkly rocks as well, most about fingernail size. It could have been a piece of the same small object, of course we also have a strange depression that reminds me of some sort of crater. I'll take a picture of it this afternoon. It is really easy to see since they cut all the trees behind my home.

The soil in our area is mostly red clay and orange sandy dirt. The only rocks I ever see are the orange or whitish ones made out of quartz (or I was told it was quartz). I don't know if a metal detector will pick these things up. I don't own one sadly. I'm building one (a weak one) and will probably buy one if I can find a cheap but good one.

I saw a book in Barnes and Nobles that had little green dots of known meteor impacts in the world, and Mississippi and Alabama had multiple dots.

I'm unsure how to find one other than just lucking upon one though.

"Wetumpka, Alabama, sits right on the bull?s eye of the greatest natural disaster in Alabama?s history. The hills just east of Downtown are the eroded remains of a five mile wide meteor Crater that was blasted into the bedrock of Elmore County. The mighty blast occurred near the end of the Age of the Dinosaurs, about 83 million years ago. All around the circular pattern of hills that make up the remaining rim of the crater, the hard rocks of the Piedmont are bent sharply up and pointing toward the center of the impact. The normally horizontal layers of more recent surface rocks are mixed in and around the crater suggesting an incredible explosion that would have destroyed all life for a radius of about forty miles."

For what it's worth:  Alabama advertises on it's liscense plates that the stars fell on Alabama.  Not sure of the exact wording.  I am assuming that that state would be a good bet for meteorites.  I would check with one of the Alabama clubs.

Good morning,
They are pretty common in N.E Mississippi. If your ever in the Tupelo, MS. area, there is a large one on display in front of a locally owned hardware store.. It is located on E. Main st. about a block away from the Bankcorps south arena. In fact it was just returned from being stolen and kept for a few years.( darn pranksters).
Have a great day Detecting

You probably have meteorite fragments. From what I have researched all you should have to do is get a magnet and see if it is attracted to it to be able to tell.

Wow this is something I hadn't thought of finding with a metal detector.
Err yeah after reading what I have written, I know that comment doesn't really sound like I have much up top hay.  Cheesy

As you can tell, yes I am new to this.

Thank for making the gray matter work a bit harder, much appreciated.  Smiley
