This may already be posted here somewhere, but I did not see a search feature. Maybe I missed it, or maybe because I am new here I can't search yet. Anyway, if this is posted somewhere else, I would be thankful if someone pointed me in the right direction.

I have found several coins at the beach, and some are clad with alot of hard deposits. What is the best way to clean coins that have this problem without damaging them? What is the best way to clean up coins that are from the beach, but do not have much in the way of deposits on them? Thanks in advance for your help!

A rock Tumbler with aquarium gravel works good.   Wise

So that will take off all the crusted matter on the coins, or I should use that after I get all that off to clean them up? Thanks for the reply!

I think a tumbler would hurt the coins that is what I have always been told anyway but maybe wrong. I would think just soaking them even in water might get the stuff off or you could follow some of the other cleaning directions they have in the forums.

You're not wrong....at least not when it comes to valuable coins.   But when you're talking about clad that is worth little or nothing above it's face value, tumbling is fine-----you're just going to spend the coin or sell it back to the bank anyway.    Smiley

Thanks for the reply gentlemen, looks like I will need to get a good tumbler for clad, and if I find and rare coins, what do you suggest for cleaning?

If you find a rare coin, the best thing to do is NOT clean it

Okay, what about storing it? Should I keep it is salt water, or is it okay to put in fresh water? Or no water at all? Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I get it right if I do find one. I really appreciate all the responses.

For all the coins you find at the coast, I'd probably soak them over night in distilled water and pat them dry (not rub).  If you're really concerned about them and think they may be valuable, I'd soak them for at least a week or two changing the water regularly.  This will have the added benefit of removing some of the surface crud without damaging the coin.   When done, either pat them dry or use a hair dryer on them and then store them in mylar coin flips.

GoldDigger, Seldom, and some of the others that live closer to the ocean than will probably have more detailed suggestions (not to mention the fact that you'll probably find the topic discussed at length in The Research and Techniques portion of the Site under Cleaning, Preservation & Storage)

Lots of coin collectors prefer the patina so unless there is some major issues like rust or something I would not clean most coins beyond a simple distilled water clean.Though I like to collect ancient roman coins and in that case I say clean them (unless they are identifiable then you are just going to hurt them).
