Is there any relationship to the depth an MD can detect vs the coil size?

Hello Rick,

yes there is! Smaller coins of better sensitivity to small items, larger coils have greater depth on bigger items.

Regards,

Christian

Wow, you were right on top of that one!  I didn't expect such a quick answer (being a newbie here)!  So, have you found that larger coiled MD's consume more power?

Hello RIck,

a larger coil possibly consums more power but nothing to worry about. It is not remarkable.

In most cases the factory set / standard coil is the best choice. Only with so called PI machines it makes sense to hav a larger selection of different sized coins for deep cache hunting.

Regards,

Christian

Thanks for sharing that Christian. I thought larger coils consumed alot more power also.

In trashy, brushy, or heavily mineralized a small coil may be the only option at the expense of depth.
A larger coil has more depth but makes pinpointing more difficult. With a stock 9"coil Iv,e found both pennies(US) and pull tabs at 8-10 inches so usually depends on how deep I want to dig.Okay, so maybe thats why its been a mediocre year sofar.

Hello again Rickster . Yes , on VLF Metal Detectors larger coil size does matter , for finding the Bigger Targets Deeper !! Not the smaller Targets deeper !!!  Do not forget the types of coils !!! How the coils are wound and are configured [the shape] . You have DD [widescan] configuration and concentric [more precise when pin-pointing] , coplaner , elliptical , spider coils . I will discuss all of them in more detail at Thunting.com's... "Tech-Talk" area soon !!!

Aloha....... Shocked...............Eugene52
