What is a good depth to find stuff. I have read some specs on metal detectors and it looks like 12" is good but that doesn't seem very deep.

Think about that for a second. You can't dig a coin sized hole straight down for 12" because your hand won't fit in it. You have to dig a cone shaped hole removing half a cubic foot of soil or thereabout. Then, if you miss by merely an inch, you have to enlarge the hole. But wait! There's no guarantee it is a valuable target so you may have dug a pop top.

Don't forget to cover the hole back up again.

I often find soda cans at 24" on the beach. That's a pretty big target, metallically speaking, and I suspect I could go deeper with my PI machine but I can tell when the expenditure of energy won't be worth the digging effort.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Lots of clay dirt in in my area.
12 to 14 inchs is plenty deep unless you plan on digging only a couple of targets a day..
Hope one of those holes had something good in it.

For 12" it better be sweet... I have found more coins and stuff in the 4-6 " range.... unless it is a big target (which) it probably will if ti sounds at that depth.. but you never know til you dig a few of those deep ones... when you find a silver dollar you will be the one laughing at at everyone who pass.d that target up

12 inches is deep 8 to 9 inches is a good target depth, but most will be 4 to 6.  Insects and rodents will continues to move targets up and down in depths.  Thats why you never say an area is hunted out.
