I realize I'm still new at this but it is getting a little discouraging knowing where to hunt locally and getting someone experienced to hunt with.  Anyone having the same problem?  I live in Lakeland, FL

Don't get discouraged glee a lot of people myself included prefer to hunt alone. Get your detector and hit the beach school parks what ever. Just check the local laws. Once others see you out hunting you will make some friends to hunt with.

I called the city Parks & Recreation office and they said under no circumstances is MDing allowed in the City.
I called the Chamber of Commerce and was told no where in City.
The state says no where along state roads or on state property.
This is discouraging.

Hello Glee,

I am not a Florida resident but can't imagine it is banned everywhere in FL as I know there are many fellow detectorists and clubs. I hope another member from FLorida can shed some light into this.

Are you far away from the beaches?

Regards,

Christian

You are suffering from the sins of metal detectorists past. We all do. Those who made a mess of public parks leaving their trash finds on the surface and their holes all over the place like a bombing range have made it much harder to find places to hunt. Don't despair. Ask more specific questions. Ask them if it is illegal in parks or everywhere. Surely they can't make it illegal on private property. Check with the local detector shop. They'll know about the laws. Sometimes an overzealous city official is too eager to give you the hard line rather than look things up and you get bad information.

Some places that I've found good to hunt are the median strip between sidewalk and curb, the drop off area in front of schools where mom gives the kids a handful of coins, bus stops, old scout and church campgrounds, lakeside picnic grounds and something Florida has plenty of - beaches.

In another topic on this forum, someone posted the Florida statute regarding land use and it was specific to archaeology.

When you hunt, keep your trash in one place, your ordinary coin and jewelry finds in another and your high value finds in a secret place. Show your trash to any enquirers first explaining that you remove all trash - some of which could injure small children. Instantly, you become a bit of a hero type person rather than a menace. Mothers with toddlers imagine every sharp spiky thing going through their children's feet. Show your coins next if they ask about them. I shrug and tell them that if I'm lucky, it pays for the batteries. Nobody ever asks if I have found more. They seem satisfied that it finds metal and if you always do your best to remove the evidence of your digging, all should be well.

In your profile, I saw that you are a minister. Try your church grounds where they have the annual church picnic. A good start, that.

Thanks for the help.  I guess sometimes I just need to be reminded of the obvious.

Glee, you only need 7 more posts until you can join the Buddy Database and look for hunting partners in your area.

I forgot about one tremendous resource you have available to you. A quick phone call to KellyCo will yield some fast answers about metal detecting in Florida since that's where their main office is.

Next time you get discouraged, try and remember that everyone has been in your shoes at one time or another. Everyone. Have a look at this. The top 5 best places to hunt and the local club in Panama City are listed on these two links.

I have the same sort of problem in my area, no state land hunting and the city won't give me an answer as to wether i can or can't hunt. I got permission from an old church and from the owner of an old one room school site and am going to ask some farmers in the area for permission to hunt their land, goldigger has a good idea and i'm going to try it this summer. As long as i pickup the trash and fill all my holes maybe any question askers (it's not only the mothers that worry about sharp pointy things, i'm a worrying dad) will vote in my favor if i have any problems with the city.

I just called my local police ( Tampa ) and asked. The office was unaware of any laws that said I couldn't but said not to leave any holes....lol. He did say I should check with the parks department Monday.
