I live in southwest Missouri.  I am minutes away from Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Any ideas on a great place for a weekend search.  My husband and I are beginners and are interested in weekend trips away from home, being outside MD'ing and look for any input someone might proved.  Thank you.

A good location in Missouri to check on is the Madre Vena Cave, located southwest of Pineville on the Arkansas-Missouri border, and it is supposedly the place where a great amount of bullion was stored. According to some early accounts, it "would require several mules to haul away the gold and silver there."

The bullion was presumably taken from the surrounding Ozark Hills, which, due to the many underground caves in the area, have been the source of numerous tales of romance and legend. However, of the several stories concerning the Madre Vena treasure, the one about an unknown Mexican appears to be the most accepted, although the details may seem rather slight.

Just before he died, the Mexican said that a map carved on a flat stone would show where the gold and silver hoard could be located. The stone was supposedly discovered around 1891, in the grave of one of the three Mexicans buried near the entrance of the cave. A map was copied from the stone, which was then either lost or destroyed. Whatever happened to it, the stone hasn't been found since. Moreover, the map, which was the only remaining direct lead to the bullion, has mysteriously disappeared.

It could be that both the stone and the map are intact, although most accounts say the rock was destroyed. In any case, intermittent searches have been made for the treasure, and, as far as is known, no one has found it. But it certainly is worth a try.

Seldom,

Thank you for the information. I know where Pineville is and was aware that there are a lot of caves in that area (mainly because of Jesse James folklore..lol), and am excited to research your post.  One cant get better than gold and silver....at least not a beginner like me  Smiley

Once again, thank you very much!!!

 Waveing

Hi there.  If you could find a friendly farmer with private land near the Pea Ridge battlefield, you just might come up with Civil War bullets, etc.  Also you might want to wave a metal detector in the floor of one of the many caves in your area.  This would be a great time of the year to do so as the snakes are in hibernation and the ticks chiggers, etc will not be a problem for a few more months.  Have fun.
