I know I'm getting way ahead of myself right now but I wanted input on a good pair of lightweight protective gloves, I picture syringes, razor blades, fishing hooks and all manner of other nasty objects that you could encounter out in the field. Just seems like a good idea to have some sort of protection against this hazard, any recommendations or experience would be much appreciated. Thanks.  Sunny

Sorry mate but in my experience any syringe (If it still has a needle on it) will penetrate any glove, land mines will still blow the crap out of you and working your detector becomes a pain, but yes if you are going to dig old dumps then it's good against broken glass other wise a waist of time in my opinion.

All the best

Funny you mentioned land mines, I actually saw a video of someone ( I'm sure you have seen him) on the Net digging in WW2 territory who dug up an active hand grenade, not my idea of a "good" dig but to each his own. It was so old it was inert functionally but I would imagine the explosive was still active. I'm a pretty big history buff but getting blown sky high is not my idea of fun. I know they make some pretty stout glove for both police and military use that are said to be very effective at avoiding needles and sharp objects but they can be pricey, just wondered if anyone had experience using them. Thanks for the reply!  Beer Chug

OK here's the deal when you dig do it with caution I have found a lot of live rounds dating from the Boer war, once the head removed and the explosive removed i decided to see if it would still burn, well it went up like the day it was made so do be careful but don't let it stand in the way of your hobby.

Syringes will even pass through Kevlar Bullet proof Vest.

No Protection but your eyes on that one.

Best gloves for Glass and Sharp Tin cans I found is Kevlar type.

There cheap!

Here are some good cheap ones!

I use Nitrile coated cotton gloves. You can get them here for $4.99 per hundred (in pairs of 2 - in other words, 50 pairs). So thin you can still feel everything but puncture resistant. Good value.
