ACE 250 /150, Fisher F2, or Tesoro Compadre, all good to start out with. Or you could go the used route and get a better (Read more advanced) detector for the same money, or very slightly more !!

All = Good  advice , If you want one with a readout- The Garrett, or the Fisher F2, the fisher has a larger readout, much easier to see, all detectors  referred  are good and the warranty is fine, as the detectors are too. Detecting

With all of the leading brands and MD afficionados here, my comment might get laughed at but I can attest from experience that the cheapie $50

9-function HF detector
works quite well.... even when compared to my pricey Garrett. I have the HF descriminator and I have used it right along side to my Garrett. Its sensitvity is good and descrimination isn't that of the Garrett but heck for a meager $50 it does a respectable job. I've improved mine via pages on the Internet explaining how to mod it for better performance. These are simple mods to do, nothing super techie.

If you are looking for a decent and very low cost pin-point probe try the HF model. Here is a link on how to mod that as well for better performance.

I like my Pioneer 505, I got it from Kellyco.com.  It was one of the damaged box sales.  It takes some getting used to, but it does tell you the depth.  Not an arm and a leg either.  I also use a Garrett pin-pointer for when I dig the hole.  What I have learned, is to take some coins, gold, and alum with you to a site.  I find depending on the weather and what all is in the soil different signals (beeps) for the soil conditions.   I just put them down and listen to them on the different modes.  It works for me.

Have a great day!

SharenH

I just pick one up from Harbor Tools for $49.00. It is a 9 functions and a water proof loop.

Wait! That loop is not waterproof as advertised. Water will enter through the wire grommet on the coil cover. The coil also is not well anchored in place. There is a mod on the net to anchor the coils which improves readings results as well as sealing the coil cover and the wire entry point.

Here is a link to a schematic diagram of that detector--- it's a clone of the Micronta 630-3003 from Radio Shack. You might want to print it out for archiving.
