Could anyone recommend a good/cheap detector for someone starting out?

Possibly something with a discriminator, or if no discriminator, something that detects a decent depth? I'm not looking for anything waterproof if that matters.

I've bought cheap electronics in the past and been pleasantly surprised as they outlasted more expensive brands. I've also been depressed as others I bought fell apart the day after the warrantry wore off. This is where I'm hoping for some "customer reviews" so to speak.

I like mine a lot. Mine has the 5" coil which allows me to get close to fences and playground equipment. Sweet!

I have been beginner for half years. First I bought used Garrett ACE 250. Now with some experience I believe this detector to be really good and simple for beginner. Good for finding coins. Definitely it is not Explorer or E-Trac, but for first You have to dig out any signal. This is the way to learn detector capabilities and You will learn to read the signals. You even want to write up what was the signal of the object and analyze this all at home later Smiley

As the others suggested a Fisher F2 or Ace 105 / 250 is probably your best and most economic bet.

Regards,

Christian

I suggest the ACE 250 also. Works good for me. I hunt almost all dirt and some fresh water sand. It finds lots of coins and will serve you well if you spend the time to learn it. The learning curve goes quite quickly. Toilet  (LOL thats a funny smilely.)

I have a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and like it just fine. In the tone discrimination mode, all metal (my preferences) it is heroic in finding those deep, small targets.

A decision on if a detector is "good" depends on what you consider good and what you are looking for and if you have had one in the past to compare one to. Some people may buy a BH with just knobs and use it to find stuff and say it's good. But someone that has had a higher end unit 1000+ uses it and may say it is no good. I personaly use a ACE 250 and have had some good finds with it. The construction seems good but I have nothing to compare it to.
