You got yourself a good machine, Shadow. I was teetering on the brink of buying one, but backed off mainly because I realized that I did not need a detector to find gold anymore. I still do have a Gold Bug Pro with 5" DD coil in my modest collection of detectors, and that's a good machine too.
As I have no first hand experience with the Gold Bug 2, I can only offer the following:
1) Read and re-read the instruction manual. Understand how the controls work.
2) Know the general characteristics of the soils you frequently detect in.
3) Practice makes perfect. If you search at youtube.com, you'll find a few videos on how people test and practice using the Gold Bug 2
4) I prefer to use earbud-style headphones rather than those which cover the ears...it gets hot out there!
5) Yes the Gold Bug 2's coil is waterproof.
6) The Gold Bug 2 runs at 71kHz and is optimized for finding small nuggets and flake of color. Generally speaking, the higher the frequency, the smaller the detectable target gets, but at the expense of depth. Near-surface coins should be easily detected by your machine. If you care to google for forums dedicated specifically to the Gold Bug 2, you should be able to get (or ask for) better in-depth answers.
BTW, depending on ground conditions, you may have to ground balance the machine frequently. Happy hunting!
