Go Up Go Down

Hello, I'm new to this forum as well as metal detecting. I just got the 9 function metal detector from harbor freight for 40.00 because I think it would be fun searching for "lost" items and old relics. The thing I don't understand is Discrimination, and how to tell how deep an item is. I also don't understand what the red target button means. The directions are not very explanatory, and maybe I just need one of those Harbor Freight Metal Detector for Dummies books LOL, but I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I'm mostly looking for gold objects, rings, necklaces, that type of thing and coins. I wish I knew how to set this thing better, or that the instructions were a little more detailed. If anyone can offer any help, I would VERY much appreciate it!! Thanks so much in advance!

As I suspected the red "target button" is a pinpointer button.  When you are operating in ALL METAL  mode, it is designed to basically change the sensitivity so you can more easily determine the exact location of your target so you dig 2 - 3 inch diameter holes instead of 4 - 6 inch holes.

I think the problem is the detector. Harbor Freight isn't the best source for anything. I would recommend buying a good used detector for just starting out. You'll have better chances of finding things. And alot more fun without any hassles. Good Luck

Thanks! I really appreciate that! That red target button just kind of threw me. I just wish I knew how deep I'm supposed to dig with this thing. So far my finds were a penny from 1992, an aliminum key, some rocks that for some reason made the detector beep, and a large screw and nut in my yard. All were pretty shallow digs, but I never really know how far to go, so I just dig until the detector stops beeping and then I search the dirt I've dug up. Maybe if I'm really serious about this I should get a detector that shows what I'm going to get before I dig.
