I have two metal detectors and would like to run a test with burried coins at different depths.  Should I burry the coin and then pack the dirt on top of it or water it down?

You don't really need to do either.....especially if you're planning on re-burying the coins so you can have regular practice/test runs in your coin plot.   On the other hand, if you're burying items you REALLY want to retrieve (like a gold or other valuable coin, or a piece of jewelry) I do recommend you mark the spot with a golf tee---just in case (and this is especially important if you're planting a long term test area.  While you get improved results from a test plot, you're not going to exactly simulate all (or even most) real world situations because soil conditions vary so much.

I am not a big supporter of test gardens, as BA point out your not getting real world situations. When I am asked I just tell folks to get out there and hunt learn as you go. You will be a pro in no time.

Bitburg and Seldom I think that both have made a good point that the soil conditions will change from place to place. I always do a ground balance sometime more than one or two when I go detecting. Thanks for passing that along.
