I am brand new at detecting and I'm scared to death I'm passing over good treasure. I have a whites mxt pro and I use the factory settings just to be safe. I dig when I get a solid tone over multiple passes. Should I dig more?  When should I adjust the settings? I need a pro to go with to show me the ropes!

The best way to learn what the Machine is trying to tell you is to DIG it all.

Once you have done that for a while and start to know what your about to dig it's time to change some settings .

One at a Time only a few bars or notches at a time.

I would start with the sensitivity taking it up until it starts falsing and back down half way.

Do you Ground BALLANCE IT?

Never

Hi  Loganj1

You should dig the faint signals too as it could just be a gold ring deep in the ground. Always pass the coil over your hole once the object has been removed to make sure that the hole is empty. (No more targets) Don't worry about missing targets, you will as you are new to the game but you can always go back the the area once you have mastered your machine.

All the best
Xavier

Long ago I gave up using discrimination. I use whatever gets me the most target returns at the greatest depth. I dig every target and wind up with more trash each time than treasure. But I also wind up with more gold and silver than most do.

The pros I know dig every target no matter how faint or seemingly hard to find. Sometimes what sounds like foil is really a nice, heavy gold chain worth hundreds.

Hello Logan, Welcome from Kansas! Looks like you got the best of the best this site has to offer, personnel and mode of operation. I would only reemphasize 'X's no worries about missed targets. They are not going anywhere and you on the other hand will get better every day! Wink

Don't feel alone, everyone goes thru a learning curve.
The advice above is valid.
Main thing is to go slow and try to remember -or- write down the settings
and recollect what the object sounded like prior to the dig.

When you are away from well manicured turf and the like, then I would attempt to dig everything to verify what it is...

You'll get it, just takes time!

Takes practice. Like learning to drive or ride a bike  Smiley

Logan, welcome from northeastern Oregon!   Welcome  Every one of us started out where you are now.  Just keep practicing  with your detector.  Your skill will come with time.  A common mantra about learning a new detector is "Practice, Practice, Practice!"   Alxo, read you detector manual several times and refer back to it as you learn.  You will be surprised at how quickly your experience will build and how you will improve in using your detector.   Good Luck!                Wise
