I'm new to metal detecting and not very good at it -- yet.  When you get a hit on your detector, what's the best way to narrow down the area where the treasure is?  I'm doing a lot of digging and could use some suggestions.  Thanks for replying.

Hello again Phillygirl . This question will get you answers from a lot of members .
I am always in a hurry so I do not like to use use a separate pin-pointer . 1st the ground balance is set and 2nd  I am now running in my pre-set Discrimination mode . 3rd after it beeps I always check the ID number displayed. 4th I switch to all-metal mode for the strongest signal at the center  "X" mark of my search coil and then dig right below that reference mark below the search-coil . If I detect on Grass I dig a Vee type plug and flip or fold the grass over [Like a lid] so it can be put back over like it originally was .  If it is only soft dirt / ground my composite digger can be a little sloppy. I carry a tiny small tarp for sifting the dirt on with my hand and then put all the dirt back in the hole .
I use the all metal mode on my metal detector for pin-pointing . Be careful what you use to dig so you do not scratch your coins . Others are welcome to comment here .

Best Regards...........Eugene

I don't know what make and model of detector you have but here's a tip that has worked for me on models that have a "pinpoint" mode.  Center the target as closely as possible in "pinpoint".  Now release the pinpoint button (or whatever your machine uses to turn on the pinpoint mode), place the coil on the ground over the target and press and hold the pinpoint button again.  Now the detector is tuned to the target.  You will find that the signal is much smaller now and therefore easier to pinpoint.  Do left-right and forward-back motions until you have the target nailed down.

John

Hello stormrider . As I stated in my post above I switch to all-metal mode [non-motion] with a simple push of a button  , which is the same as the pinpoint button on many detector models out there . I only have one device to control not two . Everyone has different recovery methods .

Boost Feature in most cases is an increase in the audio signal to receive the faint or weak signals more audibly . All the above help in the target recovery process .  Comments are welcome from others !!

HH..........Eugene

I'm almost starting out and I appreciate your advice -- even though I don't understand much of what you said (yet). Thanks.
