I suggest you follow the manual and play with it from there. BA was using a F5 for awhile I think , he will be able to give you some useful hints.

Actually, I have an F4.    The F5 has a few more controls than the F4 (phase lock, gain, and threshhold as well as a tone control), but scanning the manual I don't see a whole lot of difference in the two detectors--at least not as far as initial set up goes.
Seldom is right, the most important thing is to follow the manual and then make adjustments as you go.   For my part, once I've done my ground balancing as per the manual, I usually hunt in "All Metal Discrimination" Mode.   In other words, I'm operating in Discrimination mode, but with NOTHING notched out.   That helps me take advantage of the tones.   I find it really easy to flip back and forth from there to pinpoint mode when I do have a target.
So, once you've read the manual and are ready to start swinging the detector, start in discrimination mode, but do not notch anything out.   You'll dig more targets that way, but you'll also get a quicker feeling for what the detector is telling you and will be able play with the controls intelligently.    Personally, I'd recommend only adjusting one setting at a time until you figure out what difference a specific control makes to your ability to interpret the signal.

BA

can the f4 and f5 tell the difference between a pull tab and a small gold ring?

The F5 generally will regester a 5 cent and pull tab the same as a ring. thats why if your hunting what you think could be hot for rings you might not wana notch out above foil on the F5.
