Bounty hunter from wal mart makes a good MD - I have one and it does real good , Also Radio Shack has a few good beginner models.
I bought a small one from radio shack Years Ago (10-12) so i could practice with it, then the kids started using it so i bought a bounty hunter from wal mart, there not the best MD's but they do good so far over the last 10yrs or so i have probably dug up enought to pay for itself several times over. I do it for fun and exercise. Now the little cheap one from radio shack , my kids and there husbands take it with them when the go camping etc, and have probably found as much with it as i have with the Bounty hunter.

advice would be to buy the best u can afford and don't worry about it and go out and hunt !! Good Luck to u.

If your still looking I think v-burgh hit the nail on the head with the garrets if you want new. And as mentioned, eBay and craigslist if you wanna take a chance on a better used one.
