Which is better for my Bounty Hunter:

Li-Ion 8.4v @500mah charges in 1 hr.
or
NiMH 8.4v @250mah charges in 2-18 hrs.

Will the higher output of Li-Ion hurt my equipment?

What are the best brands to buy of each type?

Thx from a newbie!

Good question, mate. First of all the mah rating is a measure of capacity of charge, not a maximum rating that will harm your detector. Think of it as having two cars with exactly the same mileage rating. One has a 10 gallon tank and the other 20 gallons. Which will go further? Amperage works the same way. With more mah, there are more electrons stored in that "gas tank" for a higher rating. That means the 500mah batteries will last 2x as long as the 250s. In theory.

The reality of battery life is how long it takes to drop to a critically low voltage, which is what your machine needs to actually turn on and work. In most cases, 8.4 volt batteries will discharge in use rapidly to a level of 7.2v. Depending on the load your detector presents to the batteries, your discharge curve will put you into an inoperable range that might surprise you. I do not recommend 8.4v batteries in any detector for this reason.

I suggest you go to Google and us "true 9v nimh" as your search term. Buy batteries from US sellers for best warranty should one of them fail or be bad on arrival. Look for the low self discharge batteries that come fully charged. They're out there. The true 9v batteries have a starting voltage of 9.6v and even a 300mah battery will outperform a larger capacity 8.4v battery.

I hope this clears things up for you a bit. As to what brand, I personally prefer Vapex over others even though they are not low discharge batteries. I have one set over 10 years old that has hundreds of recharges on it and it performs as good as the brand new sets I also use.

Thank you for your clear and concise help. I conclude from your response that Li-ION is better (longer lasting output) but that any 9volt battery that lists actual output of 8.4v are inferior to "true 9v"?
Are there true 9v Li-ION available do you think?

At the moment, I consider Li-Ion to be a fragile technology. I've used them before in model airplanes and their failure can be catastrophic. They don't just die, they do it spectacularly. Until it is a more stable technology, I won't even consider usint them in a detector. You'd need to build a special charge harness for each detector, as well.

Only Thing I know about LI is they Suck in a Lap Top Computer.

Had three and they all Died in the first year.

Reading up on them they start to die from the day there born.

They don't do well at all here in the Southwest with the Heat.

Nope!   I would rather have Ni Cd's!

Not a fan of NiMh ether.   GD says there are some good ones out there now but until I try them I want nothing to do with them any more.
