Go Up Go Down

hi everyone, i am wondering just how many metal detectorists can support themselves purely from their finds made in the field.
as a middle aged man increaseingly dissillusioned with the rat race and yet another reccession ,possibly caused by the people with all the money etc, i am interested if others have managed to liberate themselves by gains made from their detecting lifestyle. to my mind md ticks all my boxes, ie, outside in fresh air, able to go and search wherever and whenever ,within reason, join with others in the same vein, and generally  pursue a healthy, fascinating, historically significant perhaps, lifestyle. i would be appreciative and interested in others views on the subject. happy hunting.

Hi Richard,
Well I guess at least we're in the right part of the world.
One hit like the Staffordshire hoard and ...... well ... made for life.
The only guys really that make any money I would guess are the metal detector "dealers".
I would think making  money on a "day to day" basis would be incredibly hard.
Just disposing of "finds" (unless it's pretty spectacular!) would be difficult enough in the current economic climate.
Just funding each days hunting would be a pain too, petrol, batteries etc....
I think we all have that dream, but sadly, it only happens for a few.....Cry
Stick with the "Rat Race" for now......

Regards

Paul

Hey Richard yes it can and is being done by many people, but its not all sunshine and fresh air. 10 % or less of your time is recovery. There are hours spend researching, cleaning, and selling your finds. 75 percent of the time I go looking for a cache of gold I come home with a truck load of bottles, petrified wood, rocks , fossils or broken furniture. If it can be sold I bring it home. You have to build a list of buyers and shops that will take your finds.
If your thinking of making a living hunting the park a few hours a day, then No its not for you. If your willing to work 60/70 hours a week often alone then yeah you got a shot.
As Paul said the economic climate has touched us all, not a good time to quit a real job to become a TH you need to do a lot of soul searching before you do that.

Seldom is correct. Research as a precursor and cleaning, repairing and selling as the end game take up far more time than getting out and making a recovery. If you find a huge score of some kind, it's most likely to happen by way of luck rather than work.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

hi paul, thanks for reply. i think you are probably right about generating a full time income from md. i'll keep the dream though. just the kick from turning up an old medieval coin or anything with history to it is what really spurs me on. as i suppose it does for many others.
any financial gain from finds is a bonus. just love the looking really.

happy hunting,

Richy.

I know of Two Beach Hunters that pull $20,000 or more in Gold Rings along a 700 mile beach.  It depends on what you call a living !

I could deal with that as I don't pull $10,000 a year now.

You could be the one finding the 6lb gold nugget!

That is why it's called Treasure Hunting.

 Great

Hunting is the Operative Word!
