Tesoro Eldorado

Huh?Hey, I'm not coming up with any great ideas for markers in the test garden I'm trying to make. Any ideas from experienced detectors? I used flat jar lids, which of course have to be moved in order to test there. I marked what was in the hole and the depth on bottom of lids. My chihuahua keeps moving some of the taller lids. I have a new Tesoro that is way more sensitive than the old borrowed BH Fastracker so I'm having a heck of a time finding MY stuff to remark, for all the old stuff in the ground that the BH was missing. Gotta love those pups! I guess I'm getting some good practice in, But I'd prefer to get this garden thing down and organized. Thanks a lot EJ

Here's what I do for testing in soil. It sounds like a bit of work but it's really great and very accurate.

First, find yourself a nice length of steel pipe that will take a bit of hammering since we're going to drive it into the ground. If you wish, you can grind the business end to a sort of wedged edge to assist in driving it into the ground. A pipe around 2 inches (50mm) works great. Also, a Frisbee(tm) is helpful.

Next, take your test targets and put them into screw capped plastic bottles with a strong piece of nylon string attached. Bricklayer's cord works great for this. We're not done with this yet but have to wait until the next step to continue.

Go to your test area and using the all metal mode, insure that the test area is metal free. When you find a good spot, pound that pipe into the ground straight down to the depth you want to reach. Marking the pipe may help you with this but a ruler can be just as good. Twist the pipe, then bring the pipe back up with the dirt inside and drop the dirt into the Frisbee(tm). Open the bottle, fill the bottle with some of the dirt, pack it tight and put the cap back on.

Drop the bottle into your hole leaving the string above ground, fill the hole back up with dirt and give your buried target a test. When you're done, retrieve your target and start over with the next one. You can do this in your own back yard or in the field. Everything fits into a relatively small space.

How about colored golf tees.  You can record what each color means as far as item and depth.  Push 'em flat to the surface so the detector can pass over them even if you skim the grass.

This is probably a silly notion but he could actually use a metal detector to find his test targets after his dog moves the markers.

Popsicle sticks or the larger tongue depressors would work. Paint them to preserve them. Confuse the dog.

 Huh?  uh- hem    He is a She,  and I love the golf tees idea that was thrown out, but the popsicle sticks I have so they are free. Thanks everyone. By the way this hobby seems to be predominately male, but does anyone know the approx ratio of women to men on this site?  Thanks, EJ

Well I've made a few iron finds in my 100+ yr old yard. Ready to find an old coin. I'm having trouble pinpointing with my Eldorado, the newer model. I'm practicing, and I know its hard to disc out large iron. I used the popsicle stick idea on the markers for test garden. Low and behold the first time the dog went out, what did he have in his mouth when I looked out? A popsicle stick that had been buried with just 3/4 " sticking out. I included a few pics of finds, the horseshoe looking item I found today. Not sure what it was. There is also one of the pup with the old marker ( jar lid ) in his mouth. HH Smiley

Hay EJ,

I put in a test garden with a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II.
The garden still was not too bad with my Garrett GTAx 500.

But when I got a Tesoro Cibola, the nice clean garden came
alive with new targets. I had to clean it out all over again.

You should be able to cut out most large iron with a Eldorado.
I have used Eldorado uMax, Silver Sabre uMax, Vaquero, Cibola,
Compadre and EuroSabre uMax.

I can blank out a large pair of plires with an Eldorado with
no problem.

When putting in a new garden, it works great to line it up
with a building, or square structure,

{alt}

Another way, and this can be done with an existing garden.

Use rail road spikes, or iron pipe. Off set them from the
corners a known distance,

{alt}

With either of these methods, you should make a map with
the off set distances and the distance between targets.

This way you can always pull the garden back in because
RR spikes are easy to find and so are buildings.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

It doesn't matter. My wife tells me that women win no matter what. I believe her. SWMBO is her nickname.

SWMBO? = She Who Must Be Obeyed.
