Have/do people m/d on military bases? Active ones often have playgounds, and also with the history of them, many have been around for many years, so with that being said I'm guessing it's possible that coins could have been dropped over the years at a base.
So, what are the rules/regs about m/d on a base? Anyone know?

In the past, I always found it a good idea to contact base security and at least let them know what you're up to. They can also tell you about areas that are off limits.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

in our area here in Utah, there are some real good areas, that if you were able to get the permission, you would have some good finds.  during world war 2, Airport #2 in West Jordan was a huge Army Air Corps base, i found an awesome old coin out there when my dad was skydiving.  the old runways are still out there and i know the area pretty good because my dad was the airfield manager of the airport for years, and my grandpa was stationed there while in the service.  i know the current airfield manager, he's a friend of the family and i should see if he would hook us up with going out there on the old runways and looking around.  another place would be the Wendover airport where the atomic bomb was loaded and then flown to Tinian in 1945 before it was dropped on Japan.

If your not a Military Member or Dependent , don't think you would gain access.

All military bases are not created equal.

The Base Commander has the Say so and would set policy.

OK thanks, Yes Toleary - I'd love to do a trip down at SLC#2 with you some time that sounds like it would produce something of value.

yeah it probably would be a great day of finds.  my dad is still one of the big wigs for the airport in salt lake and is in close contact with the airfield manager of #2, I'll see what can become of it.  as for bases like Hill Ariforce base, you would definitely have some issues dealing with those folks, but i used to work at Camp Williams, and think that you wouldn't have as big a problem there as far as getting permission and such.  also did you know that there was a pretty large battle fought at the North end of Utah lake and the South end of Camp Williams during the Utah Indian War?  it's developing like crazy out there, but hey you never know....we might have some luck finding a construction sight we can sift through for a day when they're done working for the day.
also...look up the archaeological dig going on right now there in Draper, it's kind of interesting

I'll find out about the getting onto Camp Williams thing, if you want to start researching the battle.  it took place between the south end of what is now camp williams, and the northern edge of Utah lake.  what are your interests in terms of histroy or what you want to try and find as far as metal detecting.  picking out what each others passions for history are and the interests of what we want to find can help us break down how and what to research, and we can knock it out even faster.  for example if you love Indian history and i love military...we can split up the search and research those topics separately and then combine them to formulate our search planning and procedures.  just a thought, let me know how interested you are in the topic ...take care boss

I'd think you should be able to hunt on decommissioned bases, of which there are plenty these days.  Hunting a site like the old Fort Ord might drive you crazy though.  You could probably pull a million pounds of shrapnel from exploded ordinance out of the desert out there before you found anything of any value.

yeah these particular places that we are thinkng of hitting are pretty good targeting areas as far as not having to dig up numerous pieces of shrapnel.  two of them are currently very small ariports now, but the military history in them is imense and the old buildings are either standing or where they were located is still open terrain. the battlefield from the utah indian war is mainly houses in that area.  on the airfields shrapnel is unlikely, but a possibility if they had some type of disaster.  the west desert here is where we would definitely find the shrapnel as frequently as we do pop tops in a park.  these other places though should be free of shrapnel because the UTTR (Utah Tactical Testing Range) where all the bombs are dropped is to the west and off limits.  that's where they currently do the practice bombings and during WW2 they practice bombed out there, while these airfields out here are where the crews and bombers themselves stayed.  good call on the shrapnel though...we will be free of that where we're thinking of....my goal is to find coins on the old air bases, and lead bullets and the like out on the old indian war battlefield.  thank you very much for your post on the shrapnel
