I'm looking at the Garrett metal detector line. Brand new to metal detectors. Don't want to jump in to deep, but want something that will work for a variety of tasks such as coin hunting, minor prospecting, etc. Any ideas?

Do a search on "best detector".   Unless you're planning on doing a lot of prospecting, the Garrett Ace 250 is a good general purpose detector (as are a couple of the Tesoros, the Fisher F4, and a couple of the Whites).

BTW, I moving this from New User Introduction to Beginners.   That way the thread will be easier for other Beginners to find in the future, so they can learn from your question.

Thanks, I'll look at the Ace 250. I like what I've heard about Garrett, but I am sure there are lots of different quality companies out there.

ACE 250 is a great start,it was my first detector.just keep the sensitivity down to 3 to 4 bars in coin mode and you will get confidence quickly, and find neat stuff as well.

I went to the Whites website and the Coinmaster Pro is $279.00 !!! Still a great value and the $179 price is the Coinmaster without a few of the features like smart notch and 3 tone i.d. .

Just wanted to correct that information right away !! If you find a field test post it here .
