Can someone explain why some very well known
and respected metal detectors can run on just
four AA batteries (6v) for many hours, whilst
others require sometimes twice this amount of
battery power and can only work for a fraction
of the same time.
I can understand there being some difference
between models, but the range can be huge.
Why?

Yep!

Type of Circuits used, I:E  SMD, Old Time Discrete components, Tubes, And another 15 factors.

Cheap is top of the line on battery Munchers.

LOL! Cool

PI detectors require a ton of Current.

VLF can do with about 1/50 th of that.

Need more info to get you more info.

My Compadre runs for 40+ hours on one 9v battery but my Garrett Groundhog barely makes it for 8 hours on 4 of them. As Homefire pointed out, it's mostly down to modern circuitry versus the older electronics.
