I'm also interested in a gold detector.  Long range for large cache and other equipment for short range.

Seems to me that its people with some sort of technical and electronic background that get into this hobby. I would be very interested in any post regarding designs of detectors and improving them

I have not seen anyone post a suggestion to you. I suggest either the Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger which is what I am looking at, or the Gold Bug. Not sure which Gold Bug since there are so many choices now. Confusing a heck. For the price I think those are the cheapest choices.
