Just do a little research, theres always places to hunt, old school yards, ball fields, parks, firemans picnic grounds, old homes, find the owner and ask for permission also fill in all your digs leave it looking good and you'll be able to hunt the sites anytime. Good Luck...DW

Yeah i would start out with a bench test, listen 2 ur detector, as well as view ur screen at the same time, maybe a test garden would help as well...and as for places 2 go, try looking for older homes in ur area, and just ask, the worst anyone can say is "no"...Good luck...

I'm also farely new, I think the easiest place for me to learn the detector has been sandlots at parks.  It's easy digging and there seems to be a lot of stuff to find.  No one complains about digging in these areas either.

i am fairly new to metal detecting, but have been doing it almost everyday since i've gotten into it.  i live in Morgan, Utah and was born in salt lake.  we are not that far away from eachother, we should join forces some time and do some learning and detecting together.  what kind of history are you into? i am a huge history buff of the area and our state.  keep me posted, it would be good to share the knowledge and learning experience.  by the way, i like your profile picture.....my battalions call sign over the radio when i was in iraq was "Darkside"
