New user here, I have two questions I would love input on either question or both. One I see alot of used detectors for sale, used once or half hour. Is that due to tuning problems, getting permission to hunt, or some other reason?

My second issue is where can I search? NM seems unfriendly as all I have seen online is where you cant search, and that appears to be all of New Mexico. Im going to start off looking for coins. My other interest is gold and meterites. I also am interested in the Gold Myths.

A quick check of google maps shows alot of activity in areas that arent legal to hunt. I also read you cant search for artifacts like buttons or musket balls? I could use a good link to educate myself so I dont get in trouble.

Thanks.

Welcome from New Mexico.

People often buy or are given metal detectors and just don't fall in the click.

Too much work.   Instant Gratification is not there, etc, etc.

Some good deal to be had some times.

As New Mexico Unfriendly?

New Mexico is one of the Most Lax Detecting States in the Nation.  LOL!

No Permits that I know of.

Public schools are open to hunt during off hours.

Parks are all available in most cities.

Like All other states, State Parks and National Parks are a NO NO .   Some have provisions that allows for some spots to hunt.

Tribal Lands are off limits, If you ask you can hunts some.

New Mexico follows the 1906 Antiquities Act Law.     Look it up and follow it.  No Big Deal.

Happy Hunting and hope to see you out there some day.

casca, don't get discouraged.   As homefire said, lot's of New Mexico is open for detecting....he knows--he lives there.  And I know because I have lived there and have had family there most of my life.  And besides, private property (I know, Arizona and New Mexico both have relatively small percentages of private property) is always open to hunting with the owners permission.   I suggest you spend some time on the BLM site for the state.

Thanks for the reply. I am in absolute heaven, with this board. I have treasure hunted since the age of 9 or so. I always find something when out and about, but never have used a detector to do it. I dont know how I missed it, but have my first detector on its way. I have downloaded map sites, and read as much as I could posted on here. Im not going to be a favorite as Im leaning towards a tesero machine later. But will give the all machines a chance. I may have confused other post with New Mexico's lax rules, but we have an influx of Californians moving in, and they think they own everything. The sheriff has been called out twice and was nice, but the Access Stamp I purchased is getting about worthless. Not discouraged, just heading in another direction. The many many options that just opened up to me is a new breath. Got some sharp people here. Last I dont mind carting out the trash as I have kids who might just want to use some of these areas I go to. Again I will recheck my facts, and needed to hear New Mexico is OK. I have only been here a few years.
