None of my own - Yet!

Welcome to THunting, Richard!  I'm still using a borrowed unit, looking to buy my own.  Right now I'm looking at the Minelab X-Terra 505.  Most the soil here is highly mineralized clay.  I believe we are on a huge iron deposit.  I know that well water tastes like it, along with a problem of iron and mineral residue deposited in sinks and bathtubs.  Digging will be work.  I want a machine that can help me much as possible BEFORE I get out the shovel.  (:  I'm learning the ropes, too.  I hope all the best for you!  (For me, too!)   What is your soil like in Derbyshire, UK?   Debra

hi and welcome to you too, debra. as im very new to this marvelous hobby too, ithink the advice offered by ba etc sunds good to me.
learning how to read what your detector is telling you is the hardest part really. practice is the only way. different soils to try on can only help in the learning proccess. some soils can be difficult to get positive readings due to high mineralisation. ive tried my xd 100 on
my friends back garden acouple of times and the signals were all over the place. after discriminating out iron and lowering the sensitivity
i managed to find a couple of copper slate nails (no coins.)  and i learnt a lot in a couple of hours. cant wait to try further afield after gaining permission from farmers etc. hope your searches are all fruitful.

Go Up Go Down

I am a newbie, just launched this hobby back in April.

I bought the Garrett Ace 250 and found some coins my first try, I joined a forum local to my area in May, and now know 7 local treasure hunters. I have gone on 4 groups hunts so far. I have participated in two park hunts and two beach hunts and have learned a lot about the machines and techniques required to find goodies from the other hunters. In general I find these detector folks to be a good lot.

I haven't had significant finds yet, but I feel that it is just a matter of time and persistence. I know this, when I am detecting that's all I am thinking about, I just put aside life's worries for a bit and listen for the beep.

Hi Olew, and welcome.

I am a frenchie and I can tell you in my country the ACEs are often used by beginners with success.
Easy to use, interesting coins found in most ground conditions cases.

Wish you all he best.

Thanks,

Isn't it fascinating that so many people from all over this small blue orb floating in space, called Earth,  can share the same things. Music, sport, art and metal detecting. Are we, after all things, so different. Grin

Hi m8 from Great Britain Hello.  May I say that I dig every signal on good sites and only discrimanate on trashy sites, all depends where your detecting.  yes the machine will help you only if you learn what its telling you, every one is different.  so I wouldnt listen to others not because of anything its just you mite be interfering with your own judgement.  Yes it is hard work but digging up all those dud signals are for a reason and the scap should be taken home to do your homework!. Great
