and I could use some good solid advice, with reasoning and some facts behind the advice.

I know this is the Beginners forum & this just may be the right place for this question, since I've been out of the hobby now for a good 10 years and the technology has changed, leaving me in a sink hole one could say. (Yes, I have to learn it all again & learn it new)

I'm looking for a good decent quality all purpose machine, that also just happens to do very well on the beach and in wet sand, and one that's preferably water resistant or semi water/weather resistant. (I've heard the Garrett Ace 250 is one heck of a machine)

I guess from my recollection, the top performing quality detectors used to be in no particular order, Garrett/Tesoro/Whites/Minelab/Fisher and a few others....

Thanks in advance & I'm all ears!

Jim

Nothing has changed Jim those are still the top 5

Not knowing how much you want to invest I would suggest in any order

Ace 250      Garrett
f4              Fisher
Silver max   Tesoro

May want to look at the Garrett AT-Pro as well.

Water tight to 10 ft running in the upper freq and will do gold as well.

and appreciate your help and advice.

Also like to thank Seldom,
appreciate your reply...How much to spend?  That's not too big a problem, and I'd spend for a great detector that is water tight and hunts surf/beach & that also is a good coin/relic/jewelry hunter on land.

New or used is fine, so it's a tough question I know, especially with so many thoughts and likes & dislikes by the guys, and with all the options available.

2 machines isn't out of the question, but it would be nice to find 1 super machine that does it all.

How's the Ace250 compared to the new Ace350, have any thoughts?

Cheers & Many thanks- Wink
Jim

Jim, if you're planning on doing much beach detecting, I'd take the AT-Pro over the Ace 250 or Ace 350....why have to worry about that stray wave or losing your footing while your hunting in the shallows.

The best Metal Detector is the one that you will take out each weekend and learn to use proficiently.

Too many people spend the bucks only to get frustrated after a couple of weeks of hunting and it becomes a closet hugger. Learning the machine and training "your ears to that specific tune" that says "Hey here I am dig me up!" is essential to this hobby.

Practice, practice, practice is the name of the game I feel no matter how much you spend.
BUT buy something that will match what you are hunting for whether it is gold, coins, meteorites etc.

Money is hard enough to come by in this day and age, so why spend it and not put it to use. Plus once you start getting out on a regular basis it is amazing the people you meet and the friendships that come your way. That alone is worth the price of any machine and when you also find stuff that is just the frosting on the cake in this hobby.

And always remember to be safe out there.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting !!

I really appreciate that advice, it's worth more than Gold & silver & is so true!

Hi Karl,
Your advice is the bedrock of this hobby and for ones own detector & self to become one with each other, and so I understand and will naturally employ your perfect wisdom into a good quality detector & I shall be a Happy Hunter indeed.

Cheers mate,  Wink

Go Up Go Down

Welcome from Indiana
I been researching and asking a lot of questions the past several months trying to figure out what MD I was going to purchase. Its not easy and there is not one perfect MD for every type of hunting situation.
I just bought a Fisher F70 with 2 coils 10 and 11 inch coils off of ebay at a good price.
The AT PRO was one of the 4 machines I have been considering and still may just have to have one.
Read the reviews and watch some videos on youtube and you will see the AT PRO seems to be a pretty hot
MD.After watching videos on youtube I don't believe the Ace 250 can really hang with the AT PRO but that's
just my oppion.Have not looked at the Ace 350 so I can not comment on this MD.

If your considering buying used then watch EBay and look for buy now MD and once you know what you want and the price is right buy it
quickly,if you don't somebody else will. These things are hot items on eBay and most people know there value and really run the price up on you.

Good luck in quest for that perfect do everything MD and when you find it let the rest of us know cause we all
want one to.LOL

Thanks v-burgh,

I appreciate it & it's good first hand advice that's true!

Yeah, the Garrett AT Pro looks like a fantastic machine as I read the reviews and stats. I'll check the Youtube vids out and see what she looks like in real use.

I guess these things are like computers naturally, and so we wait to get the newest line out and end up waiting & waiting and never buying one because the next new upgrades are due out. I think one is better off just buying a good one thats been mentioned and just getting into it and have fun.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice-  Wink
