Extra bags now cost at a minimum I think $25 per bag (sometime more I hear), but anyway aside from that - if you travel do a lot of you take your m/d with you? If so, how do you pack it? What do you pack it in? Do you break it down much?
I was just curious.
I live in Utah, and fly out to San Diego (beaches!) once a year, but I've never takend the m/d with me.

Hey Zul, I'll start by pointing you to the recent discussions:

That being said, my favorite bag for traveling with my metal detector is a split duffel with wheels.   I'm sure you can pick them up for a reasonable price elsewhere, but I know that both Costco and Sam's Club regularly carry them for $50 or less (usually less).   I pack the detector and related equipment (mask and snorkel if I'm going some place appropriate) in the lower section and the rest of my stuff in the top section.    More than enough space for a week or so.

Here are a couple of examples:

Thanks for the thread links... so you pack them as checked luggage?

yep.....I do.   I travelled with the "brains" in my carryon and the coils and rods in the hold baggage once.   Didn't have any problems (so if you can break your detector down to carryon size, that's an option) that way either.   Personally, though, since I'm sending a bag through as hold baggage anyway, I don't see any reason not to pack the detector in the luggage.  Within the last year, I've made 3 roundtrips with one or more detectors in the belly of the beast.....all without incident.

OK, thanks.. I live in Utah now but grew up in San Diego. I'm thinking of checking out a house that was built in the mid-40's I think. It's got single wires with ceramic insulators up in the attic for the electical wiring (not grounded - just the + & - ) and cloth insulation aournd it. So that kind of tells you how old it is! Anyway I'm thinking about bringing out the metal detector and do some scanning in the yard for everything I can find. Who knows, perhaps I may get lucky and find some silver.

This isn't an advertisement, but if Southwest Air is an option, remember they don't charge for bags.  I know they fly between Salt Lake City and San Diego, but I'm not sure how convenient that is for you.

Yes, I know..
If I'm by myself, I probably would be OK with that but when family goes with me, then we like direct flights. SW always does a stopover in Las Vegas, and that's annoying.

Would never pack it.  Always take the control with me.  Shaft and coil in suitcase.

OK, so leave your batteries at home, or pack them too?
I don't think they have any rules about packing batteries.

First, if I was flying internationally, I would definitely follow JonJ's suggestion of taking the controller in my carryon while packing the rest.

As for the batteries, there it gets down to weight vs convenience.   I have 2 sets of battery packs for both of my Garrett's (makes it easier to change in the field  Smiley ).   I generally remove the battery packs from the detectors, but travel with batteries (fresh) in the battery packs.  (I also put my battery packs in baggies, wrapped tight and taped so the batteries backs don't accidentally discharge).   So far I haven't had any problems with TSA and I'm ready to break out the detector and start swinging if something really interesting catches my eye on the way to the hotel.
