Pinpointers have their place and are indeed useful. I use a Safari and can pinpoint with that but I also use a Sun Ray X-1 and it's really useful because it utilizes my Safari's pinpoint feature since it runs through my detector which locks me dead on the target with a noticeable volume swell as I get closer until I zero in on the exact spot. A standard pinpointer just beeps when you're getting close but the target may still be in the side of the hole or deeper down which still leaves you searching bit more.

My favorite pinpointers are the:

Detectorpro Pistol Probe (if you want a carry along) Looks like a gun though which kinda makes some guys nervous. It searches deep though, about 5-6 inches. Deeper than any others that I know of.
Sun Ray X-1 (Mounts onto and works through your detector) Search depth about 3-4 inches.
Garret Pro Pointer-Carry Along (Never had one but hear they're a nice choice as well)

Having said all that would I enjoy MD'ing using only my detector's pinpointer? Absolutely. It would just take a little bit more time finding the target, but like homefire said, "I'm in no race". This is all about fun man. Grab your gear (whatever it may be) and go explore!  Detecting
