I don't do Discrim, Just go Low and Slow.

If you Deicrim, Set it just to Knock out the Foil and Gold Rings!

If it's really Trashy, Ya Need one of these!

Josey , I never discriminate either , I dig it all, learned my lesson a long time ago was out hunting with a friend passed right over a spot , and he came along and dug up a engagement ring,  thats when i found out, he does like a lot of the old timers here do, Digs It All, so thats what i do now. and have since that ring incident.

The 4 inch coil is definitely you're friend....just make sure that you overlap it just like you do a larger coil  Smiley   Three things to keep in mind about trashy areas:
 1)  a whole lot of detectorist give up on them and move on to other areas after 20 to 30 minutes of digging up "nothing but junk"   and once they've tried the site 2 or 3 times, they probably won't be back.
 2)  double and triple check every hole you dig.  In trashy areas, you'll often find one or more trash targets covering one or more good targets (so all you see/hear is iron or zinc when there's a barber or a merc under the iron/zinc).
 3)  the more you work a trashy area, the less trash there is (especially if you are good about hauling out your trash), so the less trash there is to deal with later.

BA

Oh, and one 4th thing about trashy areas---if they are REALLY trashy, consider raking and/or screening the surface trash before you break out the detector.

I have to agree with Aggie!

I hardly use the larger coils in parks schools anymore. The 4 inch coil really cuts down the trashy targets and I find I dig up more quality ones and save my knees and back from pain.
