Bounty Hunter Tracker IV
« on: October 08, 2011, 09:14:49 pm »
Go Up Go Down

I have a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV.  In the past year that I've owned my MD I've found 2 quarters in my front yard lol and today i found 2 pennies at the beach.  Everything in between has been junk.  How can you tell the differences between the noises?  How do you find good places to find old coins?  Does anyone know any good places around the North Houston area?  Does anyone around the Houston area team up and metal detect a place together to help with techniques etc?

I live on the NW side of Houston, and there are a few clubs. Where are you located. I'm fairly new and still learning myself so I've been going out with some of the guys in the clubs. Send me a PM and I can get you more info.

Onafetsid, I advise everyone with a new detector to sit down with the manual and go through it about 3 times.  With the detector beside you play with the knobs and really familiarize with all the controls as you go through the manual.    The first dozen times you go out with the detector take the manual with you and refer to it as you hunt.  It takes time and a lot of practice to learn what your detector is telling you!  Practice, Practice, Practice!!!

I signed up on that today!  Used same username seems pretty cool but of all the forums I've looked at, I like this one the best so far.  I may look into joining that club in Conroe,  they meet real close to where i live.

I definitely recommend at least visiting the club.  You should be able to tell within a couple of meetings or not whether it is worth joining.   My wife and I both enjoy the club we belong to here and have gained a lot by our belonging to it.  (And of course reading past posts and current posts on THunting.com helps).

Arfieboy is correct about reading the manual.   That's one of the truly helpful steps that most people overlook.  Personally, I recommend reading it through once; then reading it through again with the detector in your hands and exploring the various features the manual talks about (so you know where they are and what does what).  THEN go out in your yard or the nearest legal hunting spot and start using the detector the way you think the manual said to.  Keep notes (either mental or actual) of what kind of signals you got and what you found (or didn't find) each time you dug a "target".   Then go back and read the manual again in light of your actual experience....things will actually start making sense to you then.

After that, it's practice, practice, practice.   (But try to make your practice smart by keeping notes).   You'll want to go back to the manual a few more times as you notice certain patterns so you can understand why they are occurring and either capitalize on them or eliminate them.

And when you come up with questions that you can't find the answers to, either ask someone at your local club or search our forums.   If you can't find the answers, start a topic here (the more specific the question the better).  Someone will come up with the answer.

I spoke to my coworker and he's a member of all 3 and he said the Conroe club does more fun activities. I figured he would know being a member of all of them. The next meeting is not this week, but next. I plan to make it if I can (3rd Thursday).

The local site I check the "Plan a Group Hunt" for activities that are planned with the clubs. I've gone on 2 group hunts with some of the guys.

If you are looking for coins ,i have had good luck at playgrounds. turn off the discriminator  and dig everything that makes noise. Try and go when playground is empty so you can go slow . remember rings and pull tabs read the same. good luck
