You're right, I don't want to dig a huge hole in the ground to find a pepsi can.
Though I'm sure to have to pull kilos of ground before I find anything interresting.

So, back to my first question : make or buy?

In the case I make one, is there a need of programming anything in the 2010? Or are ther only components that work after you solder them, without any "hex" to fit inside?

Is the 2010 too performant for what I want to do?

So many questions...
I know there are answers on the forums, but it is such a labyrinth to find good info...

I think you have to buy MD of the new (2010) generation or see it schemes in the Internet because it has new revolutionary technology, and, if you can, repeat that principles in your own MD

you may find it personally rewarding to build your own detector, but as a practical matter it usually makes more sense to buy one----especially when you figure it the time involved and the cost over-runs.
In addition to the Garrett 250, you might want to look at the Teknetics Delta or Gamma and at the Tesoro Silver Umax or Cibola or Golden Umax
